Anointing of the Sick

“By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priest, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. The proper effects of the sacrament include a special grace of healing and comfort to the Christian who is suffering the infirmities of serious illness or old age, and the forgiving of the person’s sins.” (CCC 1499, 1532)

Anointing of the sick is administered by the priest in a number of circumstances, including:

In danger of death

Increased old age

Before surgery

Before giving birth

This sacrament is celebrated when requested to the priest. A communal celebration of this sacrament occurs twice a year, in the fall and in the spring.
